As part of the “Risk Management and Prevention of Antibiotic Resistance | PREVENT IT” project, an International Workshop titled One Health Approach in Combating Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) was organized by the School of Public Health, KIIT DU on 10th December 2021 from 2.30 PM – 4.30 PM (IST) on virtual mode. The workshop featured some of the esteemed speakers from India and Europe. The workshop was conducted on Zoom and live-streamed on YouTube for mass outreach.
Assoc. Prof. Himanshu Sekhar Pradhan (Project Coordinator, PREVENT IT at School of Public Health, KIIT-DU) initiated the session and welcomed the speakers and participants. He also delivered a brief overview of the project and set the context for the workshop. The online stage was taken over by Prof. (Dr.) Sudhir Kumar Satpathy (Director, School of Public Health, KIIT DU) who delivered the Opening remark on ‘One Health Approach in Combating AMR’ by reflecting the insights on One Health Approach in Combating AMR. Dr. Dona Boban (Researcher, PREVENT IT project at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Cochin) then presented her valuable insight on the burden of AMR from the Global, Regional and National perspective. Mr. Jyoti Prakash (Researcher Associate PREVENT IT project at School of Public Health, KIIT DU) played the role of moderator during the entire workshop.
Dr. Prakash Narayanan (Associate Prof. and PREVENT IT Coordinator at Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal) talked on the Multi-sectoral Approach in addressing AMR in Human, Animal, and Environmental Sectors. He discussed frameworks and challenges of implementation of multisectoral approaches in addressing AMR. Once he had delivered his enlightening talk on the topic, Prof. (Dr.) B.Sunil (Professor, Department of Veterinary Public Health, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Kerela Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Kerela) came forward and deliberated on India’s experiences in combating AMR through one health approach, gaps and way forward.
Prof. (Dr.) Helmut Brand (Jean Monnet Professor of European Public Health and Head of the Department of International Health at Maastricht University, Netherlands) presented the experiences from the Europe region in combating AMR through one health approach. He also highlighted various policies and guidelines of the European region in combating AMR. Following that, Mr. Mohan (Founder, Rural Institute for People’s Enlightenment (RIPE), Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh) elaborated community level convergence among Human, Animal and Agricultural sectors towards one health approach. He also shared his organizational experiences on community-level convergence among human, animal, and agricultural sectors. The workshop was ended with the concluding remarks and vote of thanks by the Assoc. Prof. Himanshu Sekhar Pradhan.
