The three-day extensive teaching activity was organized by the PREVENT IT team in collaboration with Chitkara School of Health Sciences from 2nd – 4th August, 2022. The event was organized as part of the Erasmus plus funded project – PREVENT IT. One of the objectives of the project is to promote teaching mobility of European faculty to India to implement the courses on Antibiotic Resistance. In this regard, Prof. Olga Gershuni, Coordinator, Maastricht University, Maastricht, Netherlands came all the way to Chitkara University, Punjab to share her knowledge and experience on Antibiotic resistance. The target audience was bachelor students from Allied health sciences with two backgrounds i.e. Basic Medical Laboratory Sciences (BMLS) and Operation Theatre Technologists (OTT).
The content of the teaching activity revolved around the basic concepts, causes, risk and management strategies to prevent the spread of Antibiotic Resistance. Apart from the lecturing, Prof. Olga gave the students a chance to brainstorm and come up with ideas on how to combat the issue of Antibiotic Resistance. The students worked in groups and learned the techniques of team building and working together. Further, the students got the opportunity to learn via a different teaching methodology viz. problem-based learning. The students were asked to go through an article, followed by group discussion and presentations. The session also included the sharing of thoughts from India and Europe on how to create awareness among different target audiences.
The event was concluded by certificate distribution to the students and vote of thanks from students to Prof. Olga Gershuni. This teaching activity not only genuinely helped students strengthen their knowledge on Antibiotic Resistance but also gave them an insight of what role they can play as an individual to combat the situation.
