It is a well-known fact that an empowered community influences the social, cultural, and economic areas of society. Local community empowerment enables people to take control over their decisions and factors that shape their lives. With the same thought, the Voluntary Health Association of Tripura (VHAT), a partner non-governmental organization of Prevent It Project hosted an event, ‘Handle Antibiotics with Care’, on 26th March 2022 at VHAT. The target audience was teachers, Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) workers and their supervisors, along with a few school students.

The researchers from Indian partner universities- Dr. Kiranjeet Kaur, Dr. Dona Boban, Dr. Rakshitha K., Ms. Riya Joshi and Mr. Jyoti Prakash conducted this awareness session. The pre and post assessment of participants and technical management was handled by the project manager Ms. Varnika Sharma. Mr. Sujit Ghosh (Assistant Director, VHAT) played a pivotal role in the organisation of the workshop. The participants were taught the appropriate use of antibiotics, basics of Antibiotic Resistance (ABR), causes, impact, and preventive strategies to control and keep a check on ABR.

Various teaching methodologies such as PowerPoint presentation, videos, games, group discussions were used to make the participants understand the concept. The preventive strategies were the main focus of the talk. A fruitful group discussion was also conducted, which gave the participants a platform to voice their opinion on the future pandemic. At the last, Mr. Muni Mohan (Secretary, Rural Institute for People’s Enlightenment) delivered the concluding remarks for the session. The session was successful to trigger the thought process on preventing ABR among participants.
