“RISK MANAGEMENT AND PREVENTION OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE: Combating Antibiotic Resistance” SYMBIOSIS DISSEMINATION EVENT

Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest public health challenges of our time. Each year in the U.S., at least 2.8 million people get an antibiotic-resistant infection, and more than 35,000 people die. Fighting this threat is a public health priority that requires a collaborative global approach across sectors. Hence, the event was organised by the team PREVENT IT, aiming to disseminate extensive information on the Antibiotic Resistance and strategies to combat it at the individual, institutional, and community levels.

The theme of event was “Combating Antibiotic Resistance: Strategy on antibiotic resistance and prudent use of antibiotics” The event took place on 27th November 2021 (Saturday) from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm on Zoom platform and live streamed on YouTube to reach maximum people. Five esteemed speakers from various fields of antibiotic resistances studies became a part of this event and shared their valuable knowledge with us.

Ms. Riya Joshi, (Associate researcher of the PREVENTIT project) started the workshop by introducing the project PREVENT IT, why it is essential and the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance. Dr. Sunil Saroj (Project Coordinator at Symbiosis School of Biological Sciences) went ahead with introduction to antimicrobial resistance and the need for prevention and research in this area. The first expert speaker for the session was Dr. Kiranjeet Kaur (Lead coordinator, PREVENT IT project, Chitkara University, Punjab). She briefly shared her valuable knowledge about the emergence of antimicrobials, their misuse, the molecular mechanism of action, and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

The second speaker for the event was Dr. Vandana. K. E. (Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology MAHE, Manipal). She empowered us with the knowledge of various strategies involved in the early diagnosis of antimicrobial resistance. The session was further continued by Dr. Milind Choudhari (Founder and CEO, Welnnovate Biosolutions Pvt. Ltd, Pune) who enlighted the audience about the opportunities and challenges associated with Antimicrobial Resistance, along with ongoing work in their laboratories related to antibiotic resistance.

The session was then taken over by Dr. Sanjeev. K. Singh (Chief Medical Superintendent, Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kerala) who elaborated about the procedure, barriers and challenges for implementation Science in Antimicrobial Stewardship. The last speaker for the session was Dr. Karishma Kaushik (Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune) who shed light on her work on the structural and functional repository of antimicrobial peptides for biofilm studies, and a case study of its application. Ms. Riya Joshi presented the vote of thanks to the esteemed speakers.
