Teaching Module on Antibiotic Resistance by Prof. Umberto Musazzi and Prof. Paolo Rocco at School of Public Health, KIIT Deemed to be University (KIIT-DU), Odisha, India

The three-day extensive teaching activity was organized by the PREVENT IT team of the School of Public Health, KIIT-DU from 23rd – 25th August 2022. The event was organized as part of the Erasmus plus funded project – PREVENT IT. One of the objectives of the project is to promote teaching mobility of European faculty to India to implement the courses on Antibiotic Resistance. In this regard, Prof. Umberto Musazzi and Prof. Paolo Rocco, Adjunct Professors at University of Milan, Milan, Italy came all the way to School of Public Health, KIIT- DU, Bhubaneswar, Odisha to share their knowledge and experience on Antibiotic resistance. The target audience were students from public health and hospital administration background.

The content of the teaching activity revolved around the basics of antibiotic resistance, European medicine agency (EMA), One health and European joint programme, Medical and non-medical products, Veterinary antibiotics that affect human health and its associated guidelines that is used, Novel therapies in veterinary science and Pharmacovigilance. Prof. Umberto Musazzi and Prof. Paolo Rocco also stressed upon the development of newer antibiotics, uses of nanotechnology in antibiotics production and development of complex medicine using this technology. The session also included the sharing of thoughts and discussion were based on the issues and challenges from India and European perspectives and solution-based approaches were given by both of the experts in combating the issues of antibiotic resistance.

The program finished with the delivery of certificates to the students and a vote of appreciation from the students to Prof. Umberto Musazzi and Prof. Paolo Rocco. This instructional exercise not only helped students improve their understanding about antibiotic resistance, but it also showed them what role they may play as individuals in combating the crisis.
